How Much Does a Fence Cost in Boise and the Treasure Valley?

Installed per foot ranges for cedar, vinyl, wrought iron, chain link and agricultural fence, what moves the number, and what is included in a Robell Fence bid. Planning numbers from the bids we write, not a quote.

Short answer / 01

The short answer

Installed, with the old fence removed and the posts set in concrete, most residential fence in the Treasure Valley runs $18 to $95 per linear foot. Chain link sits at the bottom of that range, dog eared cedar and vinyl ranch rail just above it, vinyl privacy in the middle, and ornamental iron and horizontal cedar at the top. Gates are priced on top of the footage.

A typical 150 foot Boise backyard in six foot dog eared cedar with one walk gate lands around $5,150 to $7,450. The same yard in vinyl privacy lands around $6,750 to $9,850.

These are the ranges we see on the bids we write, as of October 2026. Material prices move, and your number depends on the style, the gates, the slope and the ground, so treat them as planning numbers. The exact figure is the one on your free itemized bid.

Gates and extras / 03

Gates, stain and repairs

Gates are where fence bids vary the most, because a gate is a built piece with hardware and it has to keep working. Every vinyl gate we hang gets a steel reinforced frame and every cedar gate gets hinges sized to its weight, because a gate that sags in its second summer is the most common repair call we get on other people's fence.

GateTypical range
Cedar walk gate, 4 ft$350 to $700
Cedar double drive gate, 10 to 12 ft$900 to $1,800
Vinyl walk gate with steel frame$450 to $850
Iron walk gate$700 to $1,500
Iron double drive or curved top gate$1,500 to $3,500
Chain link walk gate$250 to $500

Stain and weatherproofing

Stain and seal on new cedar, both faces, runs about $3 to $6 per foot and is quoted alongside the fence bid. It is optional, and it is the difference between a cedar fence that holds its color and one that goes silver in three seasons.

Fence repair costs

There is no minimum job size on repairs. Most calls are a gate that dropped, a panel the wind took, or a post that started to lean. Typical ranges, with the final number depending on matching your existing fence:

RepairTypical range
Gate rehang, new hinges or latch$150 to $400
Replace one blown down cedar panel$200 to $450
Reset a leaning post in concrete$200 to $400
Replace rotted bottom rail or kick board, per section$120 to $260

Once a cedar fence has three or four posts going at the same time, it is usually worth pricing a replacement against the repair. We will tell you which one makes sense.

What makes a fence cost more or less

Two yards with the same footage can come in a thousand dollars apart. These are the reasons, roughly in the order they matter.

  • Footage. The biggest lever. Fencing a shared line with the neighbor and splitting the cost cuts it in half.
  • Style. Dog eared cedar and chain link are cheapest. Board on board, picture frame, vinyl privacy and iron climb from there. Horizontal cedar is the most labor per foot.
  • Height. Six foot is standard. Five foot saves a little, lattice tops and seven foot add.
  • Gates. Each gate is a built piece. A double drive gate costs more than twenty feet of fence.
  • Slope. Stepped or racked runs take more layout and more cutting than a flat line.
  • Ground. Caliche hardpan, rock and tree roots slow the digging, and some Boise lots have all three.
  • Access. A tight North End side yard means material comes in by hand instead of off the truck.
  • Posts. Black steel posts on cedar cost more than wood and never twist. We recommend them on horizontal.
  • HOA rules. A required style, color or height can push you up a tier. We put the exact spec on the bid so you have it for the board.

What is in a Robell Fence bid

  • Tear down, haul off and disposal of the old fence, posts and concrete footings.
  • A Digline utility locate before any digging, as Idaho requires.
  • Posts set in concrete, never driven, on spacing that stands up to Treasure Valley wind.
  • Gates with hardware sized to the gate, steel frames on vinyl.
  • Site cleanup and a walk of the line with you before the crew leaves.
  • One itemized price, with every part listed, that does not change after we start unless you change the job.

What is not in it

HOA application fees and any city permit fees, a property survey if you and the neighbor cannot agree where the line is, and stain unless you add it. We will tell you at the estimate if any of those apply to your lot.

Ways to bring the cost down

Choose dog eared over board on board. Keep it to one gate where you can. Share the line and the cost with the neighbor. Build in the off season, when scheduling is faster and material pricing is softer. And get the estimate before you decide on a style, because the itemized bid will show you exactly what each choice costs on your yard.

Questions / 05

Fence cost questions we get asked

Is the estimate really free?

Yes. We come to the property, walk the line with you, measure it and leave you an itemized bid. There is no charge and no obligation, and we do not bid off a satellite photo.

Do you price by the foot or by the job?

Both, in a sense. The bid is built per linear foot for the fence itself, with gates, removal and anything unusual about the site itemized on top. You see every line, so if you want to drop a gate or change the style, you can see exactly what it does to the total.

Does the price include taking out my old fence?

Yes. Tear down, haul off and disposal of the old fence, posts and concrete footings are built into every Robell Fence bid. It is not an add on at the end.

How accurate are the ranges on this page?

They are the ranges we see on the bids we write, updated when material prices move. Your number depends on the style, the footage, gates, slope and access, so treat these as planning numbers. The only exact figure is the one on your itemized bid.

When is the cheapest time of year to build a fence in Boise?

Late fall through early spring. Demand drops once the weather turns, lumber and vinyl pricing tends to be softer, and we can usually schedule faster. We install year round as long as the ground is not frozen solid, and a winter fence is the same fence as a June fence.

Cedar or vinyl, which costs less over the life of the fence?

Cedar costs less to put in and needs a stain every few years to hold its color. Vinyl costs more up front and needs nothing after that. Over fifteen years the two usually land close to each other once you count the stain, so pick on looks, style options and how much you want to think about the fence after it goes in. Our cedar fence page goes deeper on the styles and the upkeep.
